It's time to get prepared to cast your ballots. We have compiled this list of resources to help you register, make your plan to vote, and cast your mail-in ballot.

This year, all registered voters in the state of California will receive a ballot in the mail in early October.

Quick Facts

  • The deadline to register to vote in California is October 19th. You can check your voter registration here.
  • If you miss the October 19th deadline, don’t worry! You can still vote! You will need to register through the conditional registration process -the details of which can be found here.
  • You can return your ballot in any of the following ways:
    • Mail it to your county elections official.
      • Your ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by your county elections office no later than 17 days after Election Day. 
      • If you are not sure your vote-by-mail ballot will arrive in time if mailed, bring it to any polling place in the state between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
    • Drop your ballot into one of your county’s ballot drop boxes.
      • If you plan to deliver your ballot to a ballot drop-off location, it must be delivered no later than the close of polls at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
    • Authorize someone to return the ballot on your behalf.
      • Anyone may return your ballot for you, as long as they do not get paid on a per ballot basis. If you authorize someone to return your ballot, you must fill out the authorization section found on the outside of your ballot envelope.

Q: When can I expect my ballot to arrive at my home?
A: California law requires absentee ballots must be sent out no later than Monday, October 5. which is 29 days before the election. Some counties have begun this process earlier than this.

Q: Is postage paid for?
A: Yes, all vote-by-mail ballots in California come with prepaid postage. 

Q: When is the last day to register to vote?
A: The final day to register to vote in California is October 19, 2020.

Q: What if I miss the deadline to vote?
A: The California Secretary of State allows for Same Day Voter Registration, also known as Conditional Voter Registration. For information on Same Day Voter Registration, visit the Secretary of State’s website.

Q: When does the postmark need to be dated by?
A: Your ballot needs to be postmarked by Election Day, November 3rd, and received no later than 17 days after the Election.
