Crypto and Big Tech Interests Move to Influence CA-01, Backing Mike McGuire With New Outside Spending

Denney: “When special interests pour money into our elections, it’s because they know who will protect their power.”

CHICO, CA — The Audrey Denney for Congress campaign today highlighted a surge of outside spending in California’s 1st Congressional District as corporate-funded groups move to boost State Senator Mike McGuire with new cable and direct mail expenditures.

According to the campaign’s review of recent ad-buy tracking and federal 24/48-hour filing activity, outside groups have now put well over $200,000 into cable television and direct mail supporting McGuire over the past week, including the first cable expenditure of the election by Protect Progress (via Grassroots Media) and a direct mail drop reported on May 22. Independent expenditures are publicly disclosed through federal reporting.

The campaign also noted that crypto and big tech interests are emerging as a major force in the race and races across the country, as part of the growing network of special interests seeking to shape election outcomes.

“Outside corporate money is flooding into CA-01 for one reason: they know who will protect their power, and they know who will challenge it,” said Audrey Denney. “This is the latest example of special interests rushing in to prop up Senator McGuire, because they’re confident he’ll keep playing by their rules, just like he’s done throughout his long career in Sacramento.”

Denney added, “Northern California deserves representation that answers to voters, not corporate interests. I refuse corporate PAC money because you can’t take on corruption if you’re funded by the same industries that profit from it. This race should be decided by the people who live here, not by special interests trying to drown out grassroots power.”

Denney is a Chico-based educator and nonprofit leader running a people-powered campaign focused on lowering costs for working families, protecting healthcare access, and ending the corruption that allows powerful interests to write the rules in Washington.
