Chico’s Audrey Denney is making another run for California’s First Congressional District seat.
Denney, a Democrat who said in August she planned to oppose Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) in 2026 if California’s Proposition 50 redistricting measure passed, announced Monday she is officially launching her campaign.
According to a news release, Denney is running “to take on Doug LaMalfa, MAGA Republicans, and big money interests in Washington by building a grassroots movement grounded in true public service, not politics.”
Denney is launching her campaign as Californians prepare to vote on new district maps this November — changes that should make District 1 much more competitive than in the past. LaMalfa has handily won seven consecutive elections for the District 1 seat; the only time he failed to win by a double-digit margin was in 2018, when he beat Denney by 9.8%. LaMalfa won their rematch in 2020 by 14 percentage points.
